Introduction to the etymological databases

Nineteen databases are currently available online. Use the links in the left window to access them.

Instructions for using the online version of the Starling database are found on this page.

Citing online sources

It is not yet customary to refer to the Internet sites, but we would like to propose the following system of reference:

Installing the necessary fonts

In order for the databases to display correctly, you should download the Starling fonts and install them using the Control Panel. Then you should change the font used with the "User Defined" character set to Times New Roman Star for the proportional font and to Courier New Star for the fixed-width font.

In Internet Explorer 5.0 this is done by choosing the Tools menu, from that the entry Internet Options, there on the Tab-page named General the Fonts... button. In this Fonts menu you should select "User Defined" in the drop-down list next to the heading Language script:; then select Times New Roman Star as the "Web page font" (= proportional font) and Courier New Star as the "Plain text font" (= fixed-width font).

In Netscape Communicator (e.g. 4.7) this is done by choosing the Edit menu, the entry Preferences. There you should click in the Category Appearance the Fonts button. In this Fonts menu you should select "User Defined" in the drop-down list For the Encoding; then select "Times New Roman Star" as the Variable Width Font and "Courier New Star" as the Fixed Width Font. Select the option: "Use document-specified fonts, including Dynamic fonts".

Help files

You may consult the list of used language abbreviations, which can also be accessed directly from the databases.

There is also a list of grammatical abbreviations, with a short explanation on how they are combined.

All the databases can be found here.
